Quilt Backing Fabric 101
Every quilt needs a backing layer. You can either piece smaller fabric widths together or use wide backing fabric in one continuous piece.
Piecing Backing Panels
When your quilt is wider than your backing fabric, you sew panels together. For 44-inch quilting cotton, this means calculating how many panels you need and adding seam allowances. Use a horizontal seam when possible for easier quilting.
108-Inch Wide Backing
Wide backing fabric is designed for large quilts. A 108-inch width covers most throw, twin, and queen quilts without piecing. It costs more per yard but saves time and eliminates a center seam.
Back Overage
Most quilters add at least 4 inches of extra backing on each side. Longarm quilters may request more. Always check your quilter's requirements before cutting.
