Formula

Cut size = piece size + seam allowance on both sides. Pieces per row = fabric width ÷ cut width. Yardage = rows × cut length ÷ 36, plus waste allowance.

Example calculation

For twenty 10" squares with ¼" seam allowance on 44" fabric, the calculator estimates how many pieces fit across each row and how much fabric length is needed.

Results are planning estimates. Always round up when buying fabric, especially for directional prints, shrinkage, fussy cutting, or cutting mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

Does this optimize the cutting layout?

No. It uses a simple row-based estimate, which is easy to understand and useful for planning.

Should I add extra for directional fabric?

Yes. Directional prints, large repeats, and fussy cutting usually need more fabric.

Can I use this for garments?

It is best for simple rectangular pieces. Garments need pattern-specific yardage.

Why round up to an eighth of a yard?

Fabric is commonly purchased in yard fractions, and rounding up avoids underbuying.
