If your layout uses partial blocks, borders, or complex sashing, sketch the final layout before cutting.

Formula

Center size = quilt size minus borders. Block unit = block size + sashing. Block count = blocks across × blocks down.

Example calculation

A 60" × 72" quilt with 12" blocks usually needs 5 blocks across and 6 blocks down before borders or sashing changes.

Results are planning estimates. Always round up when buying fabric, especially for directional prints, shrinkage, fussy cutting, or cutting mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include seam allowance?

Use finished block size, not unfinished cut size. Seam allowance is already inside your block construction.

What if the blocks do not divide evenly?

The calculator rounds up, then you can adjust borders, sashing, or block size.

Does this work for diagonal settings?

It is intended for straight grid layouts. Diagonal settings need extra planning.

Can I include borders?

Yes. Enter the border width so the calculator estimates the block center area.
