Quilting Precuts Explained

Precuts are coordinated bundles of fabric cut to a fixed size, sold as a full fabric collection in one package. They save cutting time and guarantee a matching color story, which makes them perfect for beginners and fast weekend quilts.

The Common Precut Types

Each precut has a standard shape and piece count. Knowing what is inside helps you pick the right bundle for your pattern.

What Each Precut Makes

A charm pack (42 five-inch squares) can become a small baby quilt top with just connecting strips. A jelly roll can become a whole strip quilt with no additional cutting, and a layer cake can be turned into 10-inch block quilts or subcut into smaller shapes.

Prewashing Precuts

Precuts are usually not prewashed because washing frays the small pieces. If you want to prewash, do it as a whole bundle inside a mesh bag, or plan for a little shrinkage in the finished quilt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a jelly roll in quilting?

A jelly roll is a bundle of 2.5 inch wide strips cut across the width of fabric, typically about 40 strips per roll. They are ideal for strip quilts, borders, and binding.

What is a layer cake and a charm pack?

A layer cake is a bundle of 10 inch squares, usually 42 per pack. A charm pack is a bundle of 5 inch squares, also usually 42 per pack. Both are great for quick patchwork tops.

How many pieces are in a precut bundle?

Most precut bundles contain 40 to 42 pieces so they coordinate as a full fabric collection. Jelly rolls have about 40 strips, while layer cakes and charm packs usually have 42 squares.

Do I need to prewash precuts?

Precuts are usually not prewashed because washing frays the small pieces. If you want to prewash, do it as a whole bundle inside a mesh bag, or plan for a little shrinkage in the finished quilt.
